About Earl Hirtz
Earl is a nature and wildlife photographer based in Surrey, Canada.
Since going into semi-retirement in 2015 he has done several wildlife photography safari trips in Canada and overseas. Having the good fortune to live in beautiful British Columbia, he doesn’t need to go far to find interesting and exciting nature subjects close to home. Many of his award-winning photos were shot right here in BC.
Spending the summers at his waterfront home on Salt Spring Island, or touring on his boat up the BC coast has given him the opportunity to photograph the local marine birds and wildlife.
Earl uses a portion the proceeds of the photo sales to support several nature charities and an orphanage in Africa.

“Deer Run”
May 2024 Intermediate Category Winner
“While anchored in a bay in the Gulf Islands of British Colombia, I spotted a small herd of deer from our boat. Intrigued, I jumped into the dinghy with my camera to investigate. As I approached, I found the deer running along an almost invisible path carved into the side of the embankment.
The combination of the interlaced pathways and the red arbutus leaves created fascinating abstract patterns. The deer appeared to be defying gravity, and I love that it takes the viewer a few seconds to figure out what is happening in the scene.”
